Scatter Terrain WIP

Been building some scatter terrain today to use both for 7TV and for my Zombie games. I saw some pipe stacks over at Lord Siwoc's blog as well as some groovy plant pots so I have pinched a few ideas from there. At the moment the pipes are not going to be based as I think this will take up a bit to much space storage wise. They have been glued together with epoxy resin and will be painted. Not sure what yet I think perhaps as metal pipes would be easiest but have considered trying to do them as concrete.

The Trees I Can't decide whether to add foliage to or not. These are made from Hedge Clippings, Bottle tops and then filled with filler. These will be like ornamental tubs you some times see. Plant to paint the tubs black and the filler brown as earth.

Question: What would you guys recommend as foliage I've considered perhaps using some cotton wool balls painted and then glued on in various bits. Obviously fluff them out make them tree shaped perhaps any suggestions. They look ok as they are but they are probably a bit more post apocalyptic that way.

  1. Folige depends on several factors, time, effort, money, skill level and level of realism required. As a compromise of all these things if you can get some sponges (for washing cars) if they were ripped up and NO molded edges visable they might be worth thinking about. It's what I would try at least as a starting point.

  2. I like the pipes, tis a good idea and they look cool! As for the foliage, painted cotton balls should work pretty well and look decent. An alternative though (at 99p on my site...I know, cheap plug..) you could use lichen which is already the correct colour and looks pretty good when bunched together. Just a thought :)

  4. I love both of these ideas (and may steal them myself actually). For the pipes how about an industrial, plastic yellow?

  5. I have been wanting to make pipe stacks but never been able to find something to make them with, as I thought they would make a great anti-zombie trap.

As for foliage - I use Woodland scenics 'clump foliage' on the trees I have made (as seen in the Vietnam trip wire trap I made): http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/category/Clump-Foliage

    1. These where some old plastic rods from my daughters wendy house which was binned so I robbed the bits. I just cut them down into 10cm lengths then glued them together. I have another 8-10 rods left I think. Don't want that many but it will come in handy for something else i'm sure

  6. Good work mate!

I have yet to paint my pipe stacks....

The potted trees came out well. Clump foilage as Shelldrake mentions above would work well.

    1. Cheers I plan on buying some small trees (bush size in 28mm) and use them in some more pots as plants :-D

  7. I like the pipe idea. Why not make some concrete and others metal? Do a Google image search for "steel industrial pipes" for lots of inspiration. Some can be rusty, some shiny metal, and so on. Many possibilities--and cheap!

    1. I think I have some textured paint in the shed so I might use that the minute. So much choice for these now

  8. Great idea for the pipes, it always amazes me, what people can come up with! I'd go with Shelldrakes idea for the tree foliage, I was gonna suggest that!

  9. Pipes! Thats what I've been missing as well! :D

As for the trees, I was going to suggest clump foliage as well, but lichen isn't too bad either. We got some fantasy trees made that way. I guess clump would still look bettter. I plan on doing some myself, but I will probably go with clump and just make it look like cypress or something for starters :P

  15. Fantastic ideas and my word you are spoilt for choice from the list of top tips above! Got to say I'd love to see the pipes with a bit of rust, perhaps use a some thin paper card wrapped around the end to look like a collar, perhaps even a few rivets!

  16. I like the pipe stacks. Need a construction site to go with them. Might be perfect to go along with some of the plasticville kits I have that are missing pieces.

  19. Now that tree thing is really clever. I may steal that for the space station project on my list of somedays - it's a perfect way to intorduce some foliage to interior settings.
